Level your caravan in five minutes
A simple routine for a flat van, a working fridge and a good night's sleep.
A level van sleeps better, drains properly, and keeps absorption fridges working. Here's a routine that takes five minutes.
- Check side to side first. Park roughly where you want the van and put a spirit level on the floor or a bubble level on the A-frame.
- Raise the low side. Drive the low-side wheel onto levelling ramps or the stepped end of recovery tracks. Go up slowly with a spotter.
- Chock the wheels on both sides before you unhitch.
- Level front to back with the jockey wheel once you've unhitched.
- Lower the corner steadies until they just touch. They stabilise the van; they don't lift it.
Common mistakes
- Using corner steadies to level. This can bend them.
- Forgetting to chock before unhitching on a slope.
- Leaving ramps behind. Put them straight back in the boot.
