Free camping etiquette: how to be a good neighbour

The unwritten rules that keep free campsites open and fellow campers friendly.

Two caravans spaced apart at a quiet bush camp

We buy most of our gear ourselves. Anything gifted or linked through an affiliate program is labelled where it appears.

Free camps exist because people look after them. A few habits keep them open for everyone.

Give people space

If there's room, don't park right beside someone. A good rule is that you shouldn't be able to hear their conversation.

Keep it quiet

Generators off by early evening, music low, and lights pointed at your own camp.

Take everything out

Every bit of rubbish leaves with you, including food scraps. If the site has no toilet, use a portable one and empty it at a dump point.

Respect the time limits

Many free camps limit stays to a few nights. Overstaying is the fastest way to get a site closed.

Fires

Check the fire danger rating and any fire bans first. Use existing fire rings, never leave a fire unattended, and put it out completely with water before bed.
