How to plan a long-weekend loop under three hours from home
A simple way to find a great three-day trip without spending half of it driving.
We buy most of our gear ourselves. Anything gifted or linked through an affiliate program is labelled where it appears.
The best long weekends have more camping than driving. Here's how we plan them.
Draw a three-hour circle
Open a map and mark everywhere within three hours of home. That's your search area. Anything further and Friday night becomes a slog.
Pick one anchor
Choose one place you really want to see: a beach, a gorge or a lookout. Book or plan your campsite near it.
Make it a loop
Drive there one way and home another. You'll see twice as much for the same distance, and you'll find a bakery you didn't know about.
Leave Friday flexible
If traffic is bad, have a backup site an hour closer to home.
Pack the night before
Load everything but the fridge on Thursday night. On Friday you just add food and go.
