How we test gear before it goes in the shop
What a product has to survive before we'll sell it, and what makes us say no.
We buy most of our gear ourselves. Anything gifted or linked through an affiliate program is labelled where it appears.
Everything in the shop has earned its place. Here's what that means.
Real trips, not one weekend
Gear comes on several trips before we decide. We want to see how it handles dust, rain, heat and being packed and unpacked by tired people.
The kid test
If a child can break it, they will. Zips, poles, buckles and hinges get the most attention.
Pack size matters
Space in a caravan is precious. If something does the same job as another product but takes twice the room, it doesn't make the cut.
Honest trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. Every product page says what we like and what we'd change.
What makes us say no
Flimsy zips, unclear instructions, no local warranty support, or a supplier who won't stand behind faults.
